At the time of release, I hadn’t seen the original THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO, preferring instead to trust David Fincher to bring me his fucked up vision of Steig Larsson’s controversial novel (I’ve since gone back to visit the original and equally found it as thrilling). His remake had me on the edge of my seat and chewing my nails but sadly wasn’t the mega hit at the box-office amongst the masses. Doubt remained as to whether the the studio would proceed with sequels THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE and THE GIRL WHO KICKED THE HORNETS NEST, despite both Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig having originally signed on for all three.
The remake’s Oscar-winning screenwriter Steven Zaillian has today confirmed that he is currently scripting the follow-up, saying THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE should hit cinemas 2014. As to whether Fincher will return remains to be seen but I for one am hoping we get to see everyone involved in the original remake back, in front of and behind the camera bringing the further (mis)adventures of Mikael Blomqvist and Lisbeth Salander.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
