Ken Watanabe Is ‘Unforgiven’ In Japanese Remake Of Eastwood Classic

Ken Watanabe is to star in a Japanese remake of the Oscar winning UNFORGIVEN (1992). It will be transported to a post-feudal Japanese setting with samurais replacing cowboys. The original saw Clint Eastwood seeking vengeance on a group of men that beat and disfigured a prostitute. After the revenge takes place the town sheriff played by Gene Hackman is angered at Eastwood taking the law into his own hands which sets the way for a very personal and very serious battle.

Ken Watanabe will take on the Eastwood role. Watanabe was directed by Clint Eastwood in LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA (2006). Koichi Sato in the Gene Hackman role and Akira Emoto shall be filling the shows previously worn by Morgan Freeman. Lee Sang Il, the director of VILLAIN and HULA GIRLS will direct. The production will start this autumn in Hokkaido.

I can’t wait for this. UNFORGIVEN is one of my favourite films of all time and westerns and samurai films easily translate into one another. SEVEN SAMURAI (1954) became THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN (1960) and YOJIMBO (1961) became A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS (1964). I can already imagine this film and hope it is pulled off well. The film will be titled YURUSAREZARU MONO which translates as A THING THAT CAN’T BE FORGIVEN.

YURUSAREZARU MONO is set for release in the autumn of 2013.
