2012 may very well be the year that Paul Dano really leaves his permanent mark on Hollywood. Although having starred in the indie hit LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE, the Paul Thomas Anderson critics’ choice THERE WILL BE BLOOD and lending his voice to WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE, Dano has shied away from lead roles. However, in this year alone he has three upcoming releases which feature him in main roles: BEING FLYNN, RUBY SPARKS and FOR ELLEN.
In FOR ELLEN, directed by So Yong Kim (producer of JACK AND DIANE), Dano stars as megalomaniac rock star Joby Taylor. While trying to score a record deal, Taylor abandons his wife (Margarita Levieva) and young daughter Ellen (Shaylena Mandigo). With the help of his friend and lawyer Fred (Jon Heder), Joby tries to relinquish the strained relationship he has with his daughter, before he signs away custody. Co-starring Dakota Johnson, Jena Malone and Alex Mauriello, the film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.
Although the trailer portrays the film as being quite slow, I think that once it gets going this could be one of the best emotional dramas of the year. Dano really fits the role of deadbeat dad and Mandigo portrays masses of expression for such a young actress (this seems to be her first major title).
FOR ELLEN is set for release in the US from 5th September. It is currently awaiting a UK release date.

Considering Jazmine grew up watching CARRY ON SCREAMING, THE LION KING and JURASSIC PARK on repeat for weeks on end, it made sense for her to study film at London South Bank University. It’s also a good thing that her course requires a lot of sitting down because she’s very accident-prone. When she’s not examining her bruises, she likes pretending that she doesn’t live in Southend-On-Sea and spends hours mindlessly blogging. Favourite films include BLUE VALENTINE, ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND and TOY STORY 2.
