James Gunn May Direct ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’

In what I would consider shocking but fantastic news, James Gunn is being considered as a possible director for Marvel’s space-bound epic GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. This is shocking because James Gunn isn’t exactly one of the big players in terms of studio directing talent. In fact, he has spent more time subverting genres with dark-humour and gruesome violence. He has already taken on a superhero in SUPER, where a man fights all crime no matter how big or small with a wrench. He also directed SLITHER in which an alien being started taking over the inhabitants of a small town. Both films are hysterical and made my best of list for their respective years.

I would absolutely love to see James Gunn take charge of a huge blockbuster like GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. Others in contention are Peyton Reed who has mostly directed comedies with the likes of YES MAN (2008), THE BREAK-UP (2006) and BRING IT ON (2000), and Ryan Fleck & Anna Boden the directing duo behind dramas SUGAR (2008) and HALF NELSON (2006). These three directorial choices are very bizarre but very interesting. All of them would bring something different and unique to the film but I;m really hoping for Gunn to take this.

If it is Gunn could this give us some clues as to casting? Michael Rooker and Nathan Fillion were in both of his feature films and Fillion is good buds with Joss Whedon too. They could easily do some voice work for what I assume will be CG creations. Maybe Fillion as Rocket Raccoon and Rooker as Groot?

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY will be released 1st August 2014.

Luke likes many things, films and penguins being among them. He's loved films since the age of 9, when STARGATE and BATMAN FOREVER changed the landscape of modern cinema as we know it. His love of film extends to all aspects of his life, with trips abroad being planned around film locations and only buying products featured in Will Smith movies. His favourite films include SEVEN SAMURAI, PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC, IN BRUGES, LONE STAR, GODZILLA, and a thousand others.
