Many of us here at THN HQ were ecstastic when a sequel of David Cronenberg’s brutal crime thriller EASTERN PROMISES was announced a few months ago. Now it appears Cronenberg (CRASH, THE FLY), who was eager to return in what would have been the first sequel of his career, has admitted Focus Features are no longer interested in developing the project. Shooting was expected to begin in October, with both Viggo Mortensen and Vincent Cassel returning to the roles of undercover Russian agent Nikolai and unknowing mobster Kirill. The director discussed the issue when asked what his plans were for future projects:
We were supposed to start shooting ‘Eastern Promises 2’ in October. But it’s done… If you don’t like it, talk to James Schamus at Focus. It was his decision.
So there you have it. Unless another studio comes in, a sequel is most probably dead. The original had Mortensen Oscar-nominated, but made just over $50 million worldwide on a budget of around half of that. It appears Focus chief Schamus is not willing to take a risk on the script that was once again written by Steven Knight.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
