In an impressive and heroic act of love for Joss Whedon’s FIREFLY, Adrian Drake spent 475 hours over the course of 21 months to build a painstakingly accurate model of Serenity, arguably the true star of the series, from Lego. Drake debuted his mini-fig scale Serenity at Blackfriar in Chantilly, Virginia.
Built from 70,000 bricks and weighing 135-pounds 61 kilograms, the model was created using Quantum Mechanics blueprints as a starting point, converting the design to Lego to make it as accurate as possible.
What’s truly impressive is that the ship doesn’t just look shiny on the outside; the set contains in-scale versions of every compartment from the series except the engine room, which proved impossible to construct accurately without sacrificing structural integrity of the model. But the devil is in the details; the cargo bay and drive light up, both engines rotate, and Wash’s toy dinosaur sits proudly on the helm.
It truly is a masterpiece of minaturised engineering.
While Jeff Stevens’ photos from the day provide a tantilising glimpse at Adrian Drake’s devotion and hard work, Drake’s official photos showcase the level of detailing put into this model.
