RoboCop Remake Adds Another!

The drip-drip of information surrounding Jose Padhila’s soon-to-shoot ROBOCOP remake has been frustrating to say the least. Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 ultra-violent classic is a firm favourite amongst many of us here at THN but surprisingly for a remake of such a beloved effort, the vitriol has waned over recent time and part of this due to the terrific cast being assembled. I mean who wouldn’t be eager to see any film featuring the talent of Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson and Hugh Laurie. Not forgetting the recent additions of Abbie Cornish, Jennifer Ehle, Jay Baruchel and Jackie Earle Haley. The other part of interest is due to the original film now looking more than a little dated.

Today we have news of yet another great actor expected to join up for Detroit duty. THE WIRE and BOARDWALK EMPIRE scene-stealer Michael Kenneth Williams will appear as Kinnaman’s cop partner. This is further evidence that the plot and characters are steering away from Verhoeven’s version. This could be a good thing with Padhila aiming to make a story that could separate his effort from what we have come to know (and love) from the Cyborg cop, giving us something new and original. However, we’re praying Clarence Bodicker makes an appearance after Kurtwood Smith’s iconic performance set a benchmark for sadistic cinematic villains.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
