One of this years surprise hits was Gary Ross’ adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ blood-spilling best-seller THE HUNGER GAMES. While the three books were popular amongst fans, nobody could have predicted the record-breaking numbers the film eventually pulled in. That success made sequel and now confirmed three-quel (to be filmed in two-parts) based on follow-up novels CATCHING FIRE and MOCKINGJAY a certainty. Most of us here at THN found Ross’ film well put together but toothless (and bloodless) when it came to the violent crunch.
Francis Lawrence is at the helm this time around, with Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, Donald Sutherland, Elizabeth Banks, Josh Hutcherson, Stanley Tucci, Toby Jones, Willow Shields, Lenny Kravitz and Woody Harrelson all returning to reprise their roles. The newcomers to the franchise is what fans will be eager to hear news on. We already know Philip Seymour Hoffman will take the pivotal role of Plutarch Heavensbee, alongside fellow newbies Lyn Cohen, Amanda Plummer, Sam Claflin and Jena Malone.
Now we can also confirm veteran actor Patrick St. Esprit and rising starlet Meta Golding will take the roles of Romulus Thread and surviving tribute Enobaria respectively. Shooting will begin in late October/early November for a release 22nd November 2013.
Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
