THE GREAT GATSBY, directed by world-famous and well-loved Baz Luhrmann, was to be one of the biggest releases of 2012. I was planning on being first in line for the 26th December release date, with a ticket in hand and a smile on my face. However, it seems that Luhrmann/Gatsby fans’ dreams have been shot down by the news that the film has been pushed back for a summer 2013 release. Read on (if you’re not already in tears)…
A statement was released this afternoon, via Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures, stating reasons as to why the change in date. Dan Fellman (President of Domestic Distribution) has said that what they’ve seen of GATSBY so far is ‘incredible’ and ‘is all we anticipated and so much more’. He goes on to say that ‘…we think moviegoers of all ages are going to embrace it, and it makes sense to ensure this unique film reaches the largest audience possible.’ Veronika Kwan Vandenberg (President of International Distribution) has said,
‘Baz is known for being innovative, but with this film he has done something completely unexpected—making it in 3D—while capturing the emotion, the intimacy, the power and the spectacle of the time. The responses we’ve had to some of the early sneak peeks have been phenomenal, and we think THE GREAT GATSBY will be the perfect summer movie around the world.’
I don’t really see how 3D is going to bring anything new to the film as, personally, I think that type of visual technology suits action thrillers the best. Unless Luhrmann is going to throw some giant, kick-ass robots in amongst the 1920s costumes and cars, I don’t know what to expect.
THE GREAT GATSBY, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Toby Maguire and Carey Mulligan, is now set for a summer 2013 release. If you can’t wait that long, you can stick the trailer on repeat for nine months.
