First Look ‘Behind The Candelabra’ Unveils Douglas & Damon’s Lovers

Steven Soderbergh is expected to take a break from film, even possibly retire after finishing this biopic of flamboyant musician and entertainer Liberace. BEHIND THE CANDELABRA will see Michael Douglas headline and Matt Damon supporting as younger lover Scott Thorston. The passion project has been on Soderbergh’s slate for a number of years but struggled to find the finance to take it to the big-screen. Thankfully acclaimed cable network HBO stepped in and offered to take the story straight to television.

Based on the biography of the same name by Thorston and adapted by Oscar-nominated writer Richard LaGravense, BEHIND THE CANDELABRA also features Rob Lowe, Dan Aykroyd, Scott Bakula and Nicky Katt. Liberace passed away in 1985, aged 67. He was one of the first high-profile figures to die from the AIDS virus, although members of his estate tried to keep his cause of death under wraps. The film will hit the small screen sometime next year.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.

    Be my Maestro, Lee,
Passion more seen soul more heard,
    Play Liberace,
    Piano’s rosetta stone,
    Maestro music is that way.

    Shirtless Matt adore,
Twirl your bike helmet for bull,
    Whirl your red silk shirt,
    Poolside by moonlight, Ballet,
    Lee key-dance Malaguena.
