RUBY SPARKS is undoubtedly set to be the quirky, yet hopefully, loveable comedy for Autumn 2012. For those needing a push in the right direction, Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris are the literal couple behind this and have previously given us the fantastic LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE. In RUBY SPARKS, Paul Dano (THERE WILL BE BLOOD, LOOPER) is a struggling author, under the trap of writer’s block and decides to find romance by creating a female character, that he believes will love him and then – somehow – he turns her into reality. Ruby is played by rising star Zoe Kazan, who is not only Dano’s real life girlfriend but also wrote the screenplay.
On a basic level, RUBY SPARKS sounds like an alternative variation to STRANGER THAN FICTION but I bloody loved that and I’m very hopeful for this with the Dayton and Faris team behind it. RUBY SPARKS opens on 12th October and also stars Annette Bening, Antonio Banderas, Elliott Gould, Steve Coogan, Aasif Mandvi and Chris Messina.
