The CW Considering ‘Battle Royale’ TV Show

Since THE HUNGER GAMES is so hot right now, it only makes sense that production companies and studios are trying to do whatever they can to emulate its success. It was only a matter of time before news of a new BATTLE ROYALE adaptation would surface. The CW Television Network is reportedly eyeing up such a move. The CW is responsible for shows including THE VAMPIRE DIARIES and the upcoming Green Arrow show ARROW.

BATTLE ROYALE is one of my favourite films of all time. I still remember the first time I read about it back in 2000 in ‘Hotdog’ magazine (does that still exist? Google search…Nope!), the synopsis grabbed me instantly. BATTLE ROYALE sees a class of school students sent to an island where they must kill each other until only one remains. The film has much more of an emotional impact than THE HUNGER GAMES as the children know each other and have a past. The film was based on a cult novel written by Koushun Takami in 1999.

BATTLE ROYALE would make an excellent TV series if treated with due respect. I hope the makers ignore everything other than the rules of the game. Simply take the basic premise, add a new class and students, follow a number of characters equally so we have no idea who will survive, and give us a 2 hour pilot that introduces these kids back in school so we really get to know them. And don’t you dare add a reality TV twist to it!

Unfortunately this is still very unlikely to happen. A BATTLE ROYALE theatrical remake has been rumoured since the original was released and they are no closer to making that happen. I feel as though America has had too many tragedies involving violence and schools to handle such a subject without coming under scrutiny. But at least the author of the original novel will have to give his go ahead before any reinterpretation is attempted.

Luke likes many things, films and penguins being among them. He's loved films since the age of 9, when STARGATE and BATMAN FOREVER changed the landscape of modern cinema as we know it. His love of film extends to all aspects of his life, with trips abroad being planned around film locations and only buying products featured in Will Smith movies. His favourite films include SEVEN SAMURAI, PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC, IN BRUGES, LONE STAR, GODZILLA, and a thousand others.
