For the last year Guillermo Del Toro has cited one of his many planned projects is a HULK TV show. This seemed fine at first as our big green friend has had trouble on the big screen. Personally, I loved both HULK (2003) and THE INCREDIBLE HULK (2008), but I can see them not being to everyone’s taste. However, that all changed with THE AVENGERS, when the not so jolly green giant stole every scene he was in. Since then Del Toro has been quiet on the project, but you can’t go to Comic-Con and not be asked about things relating to comics. Del Toro had this to say:
‘I have had a couple of minutes with Marvel since THE AVENGERS and they have the screenplay. We’re waiting for a particular writer to do a rewrite on the pilot. That’s where we are right now. But we’re still on.’
So the man seems confident and with no word on another Hulk cinematic solo project, this seems reasonable. The TV series will not take place in the same universe as the movies and Del Toro is looking to mix elements of animatronics and prosthetics. I may be a big fan of The Hulk, but I think for the mass audiences he works best as a side character. I just hope he keeps the humour of THE AVENGERS’ Hulk, as I believe that is what made him so popular.
As to what Del Toro had to say about Joss Whedon and THE AVENGERS:
‘I think THE AVENGERS is beautiful because you give a movie like that – that size, that scope – to a guy that has the tone and the pulse of those things dead on, and that’s beauty or curse, you know?’
Don’t get too excited though. I’m still waiting on Del Toro’s other projects such as AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS, DOCTOR STRANGE, FRANKENSTEIN, PINOCCHIO and HELLBOY 3.
Del Toro’s next film, PACIFIC RIM, is set for release 12th July 2013. It stars Idris Elba, Ron Perlman, Charlie Hunnam, Charlie Day and Rinko Kikuchi.
