Of all the found-footage movies to have surfaced in the last few years, the Spanish [REC] movies are amongst the most effective. The first movie saw a documentary film crew trapped in a quarantined building overrun by the ‘infected’ (read zombies).
For once, it made sense for the camera to keep rolling, and not only that, but applying the trusty DIE HARD-formula worked wonders, amping up the tension and delivering actual scares. For the sequel, original writers and directors Paco Plaza and Jaume Balagueró changed direction, shedding new light on their own mythology and telling the story from different angles.
For [REC]3 GENESIS, things are turned upside-down once again – the film is no longer entirely found footage, and the series seems to acquired a sense of humour (chainsaw wielding bride, anyone?). It’s also no longer set in the same building as the previous two films, and even appears to be set in broad daylight, a inventive shift from your traditional horror fare.
However, Balagueró has left the series, leaving Plaza to man the ship alone… let’s hope the series continues to prove one of the most exciting horrors out there!
