COMMUNITY’s troubles have piled up since not long after the show’s debut on NBC. A dense and divisive sitcom, it’s made up of knockabout pop culture irreverence and layered sincerity in turn. This year especially, the axe of cancellation has hung over its head. Though it has been granted a fourth season (currently only at half the length of its previous three), the respite has come with collateral damage, mainly the firing of creator Dan Harmon, who ran the show in a notoriously hands-on manner. Many credit Harmon’s dedication to his own vision with the show’s appeal, and worry that the new bosses will dilute its very particular style. Likers of things staying the same needn’t worry in one respect, though, as all of the main cast (or Greendale Seven, if you want) have signed on for the October premiering fourth season.
This includes potential dropout and professional curmudgeon Chevy Chase, whose public acrimony with Harmon led many to believe his days on COMMUNITY were numbered. A pretty unpleasant war of words led to Chevy suggesting he was no longer interested in being part of the show, as well as generally criticising every aspect of it. Whether or not his change of heart has anything to do with Harmon’s departure remains to be seen. Ken Jeong and Oscar winning Dean Jim Rash will also be back for more pop culture literate antics when the show returns for what could be its final outing.
