Kevin Durand, Amy Ryan & Dane DeHaan Join ‘Devil’s Knot’

The harrowing story of the West Memphis Three will soon be brought to the big screen, in a project suitably titled DEVIL’S KNOT, by Atom Egoyan. For those not in the know, it’s a tragic and complicated case brought to worldwide public consciousness by the PARADISE LOST trilogy of award-winning documentaries from Bruce Sinofsky and Joe Berlinger. THN brought first casting news only a few weeks ago, including how film director Peter Jackson became an intricate figure in the latter stages.

When the bodies three young boys are found mutilated in the Robin Hood Hills, a trio of three teens, Damien Echols, Jessie Miskelly and Jason Baldwin, were controversially found guilty of their murder based on non-existent evidence. After almost 20 years in prison they were released late last year, yet still find themselves guilty as charged.

The film has already cast Colin Firth and Reese Witherspoon as major players in the shocking fact-based tale. Now we have word that familiar character actor Kevin Durand will take the role of the figure many believe could have been responsible (see PARADISE LOST 2 and you may just agree) – John Mark Byers, the father of one of the murdered boys. The news also comes hot on the heels of confirmation that Oscar-nominee Amy Ryan and CHRONICLE’s scene-stealer Dane Dehaan have recently come on board.

DEVIL’S KNOT is set to shoot later this year for a release slated for sometime next year. The teen three convicted are set to be played by newcomers James Hamrick, Justin Castor and Kristopher Higgins.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
