Game of Thrones & The George Bush Guest Star Debacle

Did you buy a copy of GAME OF THRONES Season One on DVD? Then hold on to it, coz it may become a collector’s item in years to come. Perhaps.

Why, you might ask?  Well recently HBO has come under much flak from right-wingers after series creators David Benioff & D.B. Weiss casually revealed in a DVD commentary on the season one finale that one of the severed heads on a pike in one particular scene bore the likeness of former US President (albeit heavily disguised with a wig):

‘It’s not a choice, it’s not a political statement. We just had to use whatever head we had around.’

Still, everyone seems to have ignored that fact and instead have proceeded to attack HBO and the show runners for using the head. As a result, HBO have amended the scene by digitally obscuring Mr Bush’s face, recalling unsold copies of the DVD Boxset in the process so that the unedited version can be removed and replaced with the amended scene (as well as an edit to the DVD commentary).

Essentially, we here at THN believe it’s no big deal. The fact that the head is that of George Bush is barely noticeable. Personally, this writer thought it was quite harmless, and just a bit of unintended fun on the part of the show runners. I eagerly await the second season DVD Boxset, just so I can go back and see if David Cameron, Nick Clegg, or Gordon Brown make an appearance.

From an early age, Matt Dennis dreamt of one day becoming a Power Ranger. Having achieved that dream back in the noughties, he’s now turned his hand to journalism and broadcasting. Matt can often be found in front of a TV screen, watching his current favourite shows such as DOCTOR WHO, GAME OF THRONES, SHERLOCK, DAREDEVIL, and THE WALKING DEAD, though he’s partial to a bit of vintage TV from yesteryear. Matt also co-presents the Geek Cubed podcast, which you can download from iTunes. It’s quite nice.
