Prometheus: David’s Conversation Investigated

PROMETHEUS undoubtedly brings up a whole new set of questions, and people had the audacity to think it would give them answers…who really wants answers? The bountiful array of ‘what if’ always helps a film expand beyond its big screen environment, it fuels discussions, it demands more viewings to try and spot something you may have missed the first time. The Bioscopist have been doing some sterling work by exploring ‘that’ line that David (Michael Fassbender) says to the Engineer with linguistic expert Dr. Anil Biltoo at London’s School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS). Dr Biltoo not only appears in the film, as David’s language professor, but also worked as a consultant on the film.

The main thing we’re all wondering is, why did the Engineer go crazy once he’d been asked? Here is what they’ve discovered:

The line that David speaks to the Engineer in a serviceable English translation is:

‘This man is here because he does not want to die. He believes you can give him more life’.

Intriguing insight! Although, of course, the story does not end there because the cut we’ve seen isn’t the Director’s Cut and we know this because Dr. Biltoo added this:

“A conversation [took place], not merely an utterance from David” and also “We’re all going to have to wait for the director’s cut to see if the conversation…yields any fruit.”

In film, there’s nothing like a great debate and PROMETHEUS has raised numerous questions. Granted, it’s frustrated many but it also extends the life of Ridley Scott’s new sci-fi epic and life, is what PROMETHEUS is all about. Read our review here and check out The Bioscopist’s article for more linguistic-based discoveries.
