Barbra Streisand will return to the director’s chair with SKINNY AND CAT, starring Cate Blanchett and Colin Firth.
SKINNY AND CAT tells of the real life romance between Erskine Caldwell and Margaret Bourke White, both of whom were fascinating and incredibly influential people Calwell wrote God’s Little Acre (1993) and Tobacco Road (1932), along with many other powerful and controversial novels about racism, sexuality and workers rights in the Deep South during The Great Depression. White was a photographer in the same era who was also the first female war correspondent, the first female journalist to gain access to combat zones and provided the cover for the first ever ‘Life Magazine.’
Together they collaborated on several social critiques of their southern home, most notably ‘Have You Seen Their Faces’ (1937). They were married from 1939 to 1942 and Streisand’s film will explore their complex and compelling relationship.
The singer/actor/writer/producer hasn’t helmed a movie since THE MIRROR HAS TWO FACES (1996), and with only two features before that being PRINCE OF TIDES (1991) and YENTL (1983), she is clearly very selective. And rightfully so, as she has picked up numerous awards. Barbra Streisand maybe a figure of fun to many, but she’s bloody good. And with heavyweights Firth and Blanchett on board, this could is definitely one to watch.
