Dumb and (???): Jim Carrey Leaves Dumb and Dumber Sequel

Jim Carrey surprised many when he confirmed he was on board for a sequel to DUMB & DUMBER (1994), but that dream is over as Carrey has reportedly left the project. Back in 1994, Jim Carrey was the biggest star around. He only ever made one sequel, ACE VENTURA: WHEN NATURE CALLS (1995), despite all the potential franchises he could have continued with. THE MASK (1994), DUMB & DUMBER (1994), and ACE VENTURA: PET DETECTIVE (1994) would all go on to spawn moderately successful animated shows, and each would get a Carrey-less monstrosity of a sequel.

So it was no surprise how excited fans were that after 18 years, Carrey confirmed his return to the role of Lloyd Christmas. The sequel, which had a working title of DUMB & DUMBER TO, would have reunited The Farrelly brothers with Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels. It would have been great to see how these two hapless losers were getting on 20 years down the road. Unfortunately, according to sources speaking to ETOnline, Carrey left citing a lack of enthusiasm on Warner Brothers and New Lines behalf. I’m sure many will interpret ‘lack of enthusiasm’ as ‘lack of zeros on the pay-cheque’.

I saw DUMB & DUMBER not too long ago, and I really think it’s best left as it is. The kind of stupid humour it brought has been replicated so much since its release that a sequel might seem dated at this point. Either that or they would have to change it, which just wouldn’t make it a DUMB & DUMBER movie anymore. I’m also just not that comfortable with Carrey mugging for the camera these days, ever since he turned 50 in January.

The future of DUMB & DUMBER To is now unknown. Carrey will next be seen in THE INCREDIBLE BURT WONDERSTONE in 2013, opposite Steve Carell, Steve Buscemi, James Gandolfini, and Olivia Wilde.

Luke likes many things, films and penguins being among them. He's loved films since the age of 9, when STARGATE and BATMAN FOREVER changed the landscape of modern cinema as we know it. His love of film extends to all aspects of his life, with trips abroad being planned around film locations and only buying products featured in Will Smith movies. His favourite films include SEVEN SAMURAI, PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC, IN BRUGES, LONE STAR, GODZILLA, and a thousand others.
