Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the cinema… Lionsgate is said to be considering remaking, rebooting or otherwise continuing the TWILIGHT franchise past this year’s final novel adaptation, BREAKING DAWN – PART 2.
Having already generated a whopping $2 billion, the money-spinning wheels of Hollywood are turning again to further milk Stephanie Meyer’s franchise for all it’s worth.
Bloody Disgusting reports that Lionsgate are ‘already discussing it internally’, insisting that ‘it will happen’ – though its exact direction is undecided, with the site stating that it could be a ‘direct remake… [or] a spinoff or maybe even a one-off sequel’.
The site’s bold claims were soon rebutted by Lionsgate Co-Chairman Rob Friedman via Deadline:
‘We are not remaking Twilight. We will happily support Stephenie Meyer if she decides to proceed in any way. But this will be the last one unless that should change.’
Despite this, Bloody Disgusting remains insistent that it’s going to happen – and soon. Whatever direction the franchise takes, it’s unlikely that even a new cast and crew could do anything with the lifeless plot of TWILIGHT, so a remake would probably fare no better with critics than the already unfavourable series.
Let’s just hope the studios are telling the truth here, though the dollar signs lighting up in every executive’s eyes everywhere would suggest not… does anyone actually want any more TWILIGHT? And if a remake was in the works, could anyone actually pull it off? Let us know in the comments.
THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN – PART 2 stars Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Dakota Fanning and Taylor Lautner, and is due for release on 16th November 2012.
