Big Brother Is Still Watching You: New Nineteen Eighty-Four Adaptation Pending

Writer and Emmy-award winning television producer, Noah Oppenheim, and Imagine Entertainment, have confirmed they are going ahead with yet another realisation of George Orwell’s classic dystopian tale, NINETEEN EIGHTY-FOUR. Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer (24), along with Julie Yorn (UNSTOPPABLE), and Rick Yorn (BOARDWALK EMPIRE) will produce the project, alongside executive producers, Shepard Fairey and Gina Rosenblum.

This will be the third adaptation of the novel for the big screen, the story of which surrounds a totalitarian state (Oceania) ruled by an oppressive oligarchy known as the Party. One of literature’s most prominent protagonists, Winston Smith, whose job is to edit historical documents in order to coincide with the Party’s ethos, initiates the narrative’s conflict. He is tired and angry with his enforced role as a demoralized propagandist, so he decides to try and rebel by falling in love; much to the dismay of the party and it’s dictatorial leader, Big Brother.

Winston Smith has been portrayed by Peter Cushing (STAR WARS: EPISODE IV – A NEW HOPE) amongst others, but it is John Hurt (THE ELEPHANT MAN), who most still feel owns the role. We at THN have been racking our brains in an attempt to think of someone who could do the role justice in modern cinema, but compared to Hurt, most potential candidates seem destined for the memory hole.

What do you fine fans of filmic furore feel about this news? Could anyone come close to matching Monsieur Hurt?
