Finally! The First Official Synopsis for Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium

It has been a 3-year wait since Neill Blomkamp’s DISTRICT 9 burst excitingly onto the scene with its fooking prawns, inventive film style and fresh approach to the narrative that finds aliens and humans living together.

ELYSIUM is the long-awaited follow-up to that tremendous piece of work and until now, we’ve only been given snippets of what to expect. Finally, we have the synopsis thanks to Collider and a preview ticket that has emerged on the interweb. It’s also great to read that this isn’t a literal sequel and although there are very minor plot links to the likes of IN TIME (but in space), we’re more than convinced this will be particularly distinctive to Blomkamp’s style. Also, for those interested by viral campaigns, visit Armadyne and keep an eye out for the ‘Apply’ section, we’re hopeful this should go live closer to release date, if not sooner.

In the meantime, here’s that official synopsis:

In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard the government official, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.

ELYSIUM stars Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Wagner Moura, William Fichtner, Diego Luna and DISTRICT 9 star Sharlto Copley. It’s set to open on 1st March 2013.
