Cronenberg & Mortensen Confirmed For ‘Eastern Promises’ Sequel

David Cronenberg’s 2007 Oscar-nominated dark crime-drama EASTERN PROMISES was a critical smash, much like his previous collaboration with Viggo Mortensen on A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE. The complex but gripping plot involved a mysterious journal with links to the Russian Mafia. There were top performances given from the likes of Mortensen, Vincent Cassel, Armin Mueller-Stahl and Naomi Watts.

Now THN brings confirmation that a sequel has been given the go ahead with Cronenberg confirmed to helm once again. Viggo Mortensen’s tattooed bodyguard and undercover agent, Nikolai is also set to return, as is Cassel as the now crime-lord boss Kirill after the death of his father (Mueller-Stahl) in the first film. The sequel will follow directly on and more importantly has the returning Steven Knight on script duties. No word yet if Watts will be involved but shooting is expected to begin next year.

Cronenberg’s latest effort, starring Robert Pattinson, is the head-spinning thriller COSMOPOLIS that premiered at Cannes last month and is due for release 15th June here in the UK.

So who’s excited for even more brutal bashing, naked dick-swinging in the shower?

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
