For ROBOCOP fans, the big question regarding José Padilha’s remake is, how close will it stick to the 1987 original? So far we know Joel Kinnaman will be playing the updated Alex Murphy, and Gary Oldman will take the role of Robocop-creator Norton (which is only one letter different to the original creator, Bob Morton), but news has just surfaced suggesting a major diversion.
Samuel L. Jackson has reportedly joined the production, cast as a character called Pat Novak, a TV mogul and big name in the story world. With Paul Verhoeven’s original satirising the corporate greed of the 1980s, perhaps Novak will serve as something of an update, taking satirical shots at a TV-obsessed society. Or perhaps he’s just been hired to shout ‘I’d buy that for a motherf*cking dollar’ every fifteen minutes.
THN’s money is on Jackson playing a villain in some capacity, though we’ve still got fingers crossed for an rebooted version of Clarence Boddicker (played by Kurtwood Smith), easily one of cinema’s greatest ever bastards.
ROBOCOP is set for release August 2013.
