De Niro And Stallone To Face Off In ‘Grudge Match’?

The notion has been floating around for a couple of years, but now it is confirmed that Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro are in negotiations to appear in the upcoming boxing film, GRUDGE MATCH. The stars of two of the industry’s most successful boxing-related films of all time, ROCKY (1976) and RAGING BULL (1980), could touch gloves on our screens as early as 2014, with filming pencilled in for early 2013.

Warner Bros have recruited ENTOURAGE writer, Doug Ellin, to develop the script, and Peter Segal (50 FIRST DATES) to helm the film, which is rumoured to revolve around two retired fighters – you guessed it – returning to the ring for one final bout. This arguably odd combination of writer and director suggests that the tone of the movie will lean more toward comedy than drama, but at this moment in time it is pure speculation.

Stallone (65) and De Niro (69) are still very much in demand, with the former working on THE TOMB, after recently finishing shooting for THE EXPENDABLES 2 and BULLET TO THE HEAD, and the latter having no less than eight movies in various different stages of production. Let’s just hope they still have some fight left in them for this potential slobberknocker!

Martin has been a film buff (or geek, if you prefer) for as long as he can remember. However, he lives and longs for storytelling of all kinds, and writes across numerous mediums to feed his insatiable appetite. He lives in north-west London, and his favourite films are, possibly: PAN'S LABYRINTH, THEY LIVE, PSYCHO, HIGH FIDELITY, ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST, STAND BY ME, SIDEWAYS and OFFICE SPACE.
