Pegg And Wright On World’s End Details (Skip To The End…)

Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright have finally unveiled some details on THE WORLD’S END, the concluding part of their ‘Blood and Ice Cream’ trilogy. Ever since HOT FUZZ shot cinema in the leg and splatted it with Dolmio, the loyal fan base of Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost have been hoping for another collaboration. We’ve come close, as Pegg and Frost co-wrote and starred in PAUL as well as playing the Thompson Twins in THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN, which was co-written by Wright. But nothing that would fit the criteria of HOT FUZZ and SHAUN OF THE DEAD, ie. starring Frost/Pegg, written by Pegg/Wright and directed by Wright. BUT finally, our zombie twatting heroes have opened up on THE WORLD’S END, the long awaited third film in the ‘Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy.’ Talking to Empire, they revealed that the plot follows a pub crawl with four friends, including Pegg as Gary King and Frost as Andy Knight. They attempted this particular crawl twenty years previous and now want to do it right, while some kind of apocalyptic event rages around them. The star elaborated further, stating that it’s ‘a crawl through twelve pubs, culminating in the final one, which is The World’s End.’

Wright adds ‘This is as much about where you grew up as the people you grew up with…’ This is almost exactly what Ricky Gervais said about CEMETERY JUNCTION, which may not bode well. But the makers of FUZZ, SHAUN and SPACED have a spotless record, and they’re funnier than Gervais (deal with it), so we at THN trust them completely.

It does sound like the most reflective piece they’ve done, how does it fit in with their more overtly genre based canon? ‘Hard to say,’ says Wright. ‘It’s a sci-fi comedy.’ ‘Social sci-fi,’ adds the less hairy of the two. ‘Social science-fiction,’ agrees Wright. ‘Look it up on Wikipedia and then bone up on John Christopher and John Wyndham.’

When you consider that Wyndham and Christopher wrote THE DAY OF THE TRIFFIDS and THE TRIPODS respectively, it’s reasonable to assume the cataclysmic event would be an alien invasion, possibly a plant based one? SHAUN proved how good the team is at maintaining a sense of social realism within a sci-fi context, so our hopes are very high for THE WORLD’S END indeed. Also, with names like Knight and King, could there be some subtext there? Maybe a chess reference, or could it imply that Frost will be the beta male to Pegg’s alpha male for a fourth time? We won’t have long to wait, as shooting is due to start in autumn with a possible spring release next year. Yeeeeeeeeeah Boyeeeeeeee!
