These days, comedy is all about realism: not longer content with the old-school approach of pure and simple fiction, comedy demands real locations, real lighting, real names, and most importantly, real people. Consider the popularity of CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM, EXTRAS, and LOUIE, each of which portray a very real (seemingly real, at least) approximation of life.
This trend is set to move to the big screen with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s THE END OF THE WORLD, in which Rogen and a bunch of other comedy names will play themselves. Indeed, the SUPERBAD writers (directing here too) have accrued a fine cast for this apocalyptic comedy, which will see a party at James Franco’s house rudely interrupted by the End of Days, leaving Rogen and co-star Jay Baruchel as the only survivors of Armageddon.
Today we have learned that THE END OF THE WORLD has landed some sweet cameos from Emma Watson, Jason Segel, and David Krumholtz, each of whom will be playing themselves. The actors join Danny McBride, Jonah Hill, Aziz Ansari, and Craig Robinson. Whilst Watson seems like an odd choice for this project, let’s assume she’ll be able to laugh at her own persona in this movie, and earn some comedy kudos following 15 years of wizarding nonsense.
THE END OF THE WORLD is set for release Summer 2013.
