New Pixar Projects Announced

Pixar have revealed details for three upcoming original projects. Speaking at CinemaCon, animation head John Lasseter announced several new pieces of information.

The previously untitled dinosaur project now has the title THE GOOD DINOSAUR. Slated for a 2014 release, the film is officially described as follows:

What if the cataclysmic asteroid that forever changed life on Earth actually missed the planet completely and giant dinosaurs never became extinct? This hilarious, heartfelt and original tale is directed by Bob Peterson (co-director/writer, UP; writer, FINDING NEMO) and produced by John Walker (THE INCREDIBLES).

Previously speaking of how inspiration for the film came about, director Bob Peterson said, ‘[It] came from when I was a little kid, and my mom and dad took me to the New York World’s Fair and I got to see something amazing — the animatronic dinosaurs created by Walt Disney. It made a big impression on me.’

The untitled Pete Docter film that ‘takes you inside the mind’ has now been pushed back a full year to June 2015, suggesting some slight teething problems. The film is described below:

Pixar takes audiences on incredible journeys into extraordinary worlds: from the darkest depths of the ocean to the top of the tepui mountains in South America; from the fictional metropolis of Monstropolis to a futuristic fantasy of outer space. From director Pete Docter (UP, MONSTERS INC.) and producer Jonas Rivera (UP), the inventive new film will take you to a place that everyone knows, but no one has ever seen: the world inside the human mind.

Docter further described the themes included in the film, commenting: ‘Do you ever wonder how people make decisions? Why we remember, or how we forget? Why we dream? Why do songs get stuck in our heads? Most of us have had the experience of being around someone and thinking what is going on in their head!? This film will attempt to answer those questions.’

The most exciting, and intriguing, announcement is a brand new project for TOY STORY 3 helmer Lee Unkrich. DIA DE LOS MUERTOS is the working title for ‘a wholly original Pixar Animation Studios film that delves into the vibrant holiday of Da de los Muertos.’ Meaning ‘Day of the Dead’, the holiday celebrates those who have departed through parades and vibrant decorations (including painted skulls). It is believed that the spirit of the dead visit their families on 31st October and leave on 2nd November.

Pixar’s new project is BRAVE, the story of Scottish Princess Merida who attempts to change her fate with disastrous results. It hits UK cinemas this August.
