Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes have acquired the rights to the HALLOWEEN franchise. The studio have already remade classic shockers THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, THE AMITYVILLE HORROR, FRIDAY THE 13TH and A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, making the only surprise being: why it took them so long.
Michael Myers and his iconic William Shatner pale mask was only given the remake treatment as early as 2007, as well as a dreadful follow-up sequel, two years later. Myself being a fanatic of John Carpenter’s silent bogeyman, particularly the first two films (that so terrified me during my youth), thought Rob Zombie would do a decent job of the remake after enjoying his intense bloodbath THE DEVILS REJECTS. It came nowhere near Carpenter’s classic but did deserve credit for not being complete rehash of the 1978 original, Zombie bringing his own unique style and spin to that film’s simple-but-effective plot.
MY BLOODY VALENTINE and DRIVE ANGRY film-making duo Patrick Lussier and Todd Farmer had previously written a screenplay for yet another remake, with Lussier set to direct. This time, to be adapted in their customary 3D, but was pushed back until next year, by Dimension. That film will definitely not happen with news of Platinum Dunes new acquisition.
My own feelings about Platinum Dunes is that I thought their Marcus Nispel-directed TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE retread was pretty good, but lacked the raw grime and grit of Tobe Hooper’s 1974 shocker. The less said about their other dire reboots the better. So what do you guys make of yet another classic horror franchise being scooped up by Bay’s never-ending remake machine?

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
