The Three Contenders To Helm Captain America Sequel Are..?

While we’re all itching to see how awesome Joss Whedon’s AVENGERS ASSEMBLE will be, last summers CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER was hardly the action-epic fans expected. Joe Johnston’s rather lukewarm origin tale of Steve Rogers’ transformation from zero to hero had its moments but I, like many comic-book fans, had hoped to be blown away.

With THOR 2 confirmed for November 2013, and Shane Black’s IRON MAN 3 set to begin shooting in May, it was only a matter of time before the good ol’ Captain would return for a individual follow-up. And just who will helm a sequel of the star-spangled patriot? Marvel chief Kevin Feige has cut the competition to three of the following; F. Gary Gray, George Nolfi and co-directors Anthony and Joseph Russo.

Gray has shown he can handle action, with edge-of-your-seat thrillers, THE NEGOTIATOR and LAW ABIDING CITIZEN. He also made an decent effort with 2007’s THE ITALIAN JOB remake. Nolfi too, made an effective splash in the film world with his head-twisting directorial debut THE ADJUSTMENT BUREAU, starring Matt Damon. The most surprising names on the list are the Russo siblings, most notable for their work on hit comedy series’ HAPPY ENDINGS and COMMUNITY. The duo also directed the Owen Wilson-led  YOU, ME AND DUPREE, as well as the enjoyable, all-star cult comedy WELCOME TO COLLINWOOD.

So who is your preferred choice?

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
