Josh Trank Now In Talks For ‘The Red Star’

After impressing us with his found-footage super-powered thriller CHRONICLE, director Josh Trank seems to have become very popular, of late. Seemingly able to hand-pick his next project, he has already been in talks for Fox’s FANTASTIC FOUR reboot as well as Sony’s Spider-Man spin-off, of villain VENOM. Now you can add Christian Gossett’s graphic-novel series, THE RED STAR to that list.

The story is set in an alternate universe, one that saw the former Soviet Union survive and go onto thrive using supernatural powers and futuristic technology. The first novel’s official synopsis, and the one the film will no doubt use as a template, goes as follows:-

Over the course of several generations, the once mighty empire known as the United Republics of The Red Star slaughtered millions of it’s own people by the order of a single man. The man was their leader, Imbohl, a mighty sorcerer whose insanity turned his people’s Utopian dreams into a nightmarish scheme driven by the desire to create his own immortality. Haunted by the ghosts of their nation’s tragic past, the Heroes of the Red Star discover the true nature of their nation’s struggle, abandon their duties as soldiers of the Red Fleet, and embark upon a quest to liberate their people from Imbohl’s dark legacy. The Battle of Kar Dathra’s Gate is a fictionalization of the 1979 Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.

Jason Rothenberg is adapting the script, while Neal H. Moritz will produce. Fans of Trank will be eager to see if this or any of the previous projects mentioned, will be his follow-up to CHRONICLE. He may even contemplate further offers that are bound to come his way. Either way, THN will keep you informed of any confirmation.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
