WWE Looks For Pot O’Gold With Leprechaun Remake

As you may have noticed, we here at THN love pro-wrestling almost as much as we love cinema. So when the two cross over, we get excited. Particularly now as WWE are branching out into other genres, beyond the expected array of awful actioners. We’ve seen comedy (KNUCKLEHEAD), family drama (THAT’S WHAT I AM) and horror (SEE NO EVIL). It has now been confirmed that WWE are to tag team with Lionsgate to remake THE LEPRECHAUN.

If you have never seen the original franchise, it stars Warwick Davis (LIFE’S TOO SHORT) as the eponymous and evil little O’Irish fella, who goes on a murderous spree in search of his lost pot o’gold. They became cult classics due to how darn silly they are. I mean look at the titles;

LEPRECHAUN

LEPRECHAUN 2

LEPRECHAUN 3 (so far, so standard)

LEPRECHAUN 4: IN SPACE

LEPRECHAUN IN THA HOOD

LEPRECHAUN BACK 2 THA HOOD

That’s right, he went into SPACE and THEN came back to the hood. Only in America.

Well, WWE are to reboot the franchise in collaboration with Lionsgate. This will be their third joint effort after SEE NO EVIL and THE CONDEMNED, and this is the first in a two picture deal, though what the next project will be remains a mystery. As does the cast, director and writer for THE LEPRECHAUN, but given WWE’s proclivity for casting their own wrestlers (or as they are referred to, SUPERSTARS), there is an obvious choice for the lead.

Meet Hornswoggle. He is a wrestler… sorry, ‘Superstar…’ who performs under a leprechaun gimmick. He is amazingly popular, particularly with the younger fan base and this could be his breakout role. WWE are notorious for cross-promoting their films with their wrestling product. When ‘Superstar’ Kane played Jacob Goodnight, the eye gouging antagonist in SEE NO EVIL, he would attempt to pluck out his opponent’s eyes in the ring. And to promote 1980s Hulk Hogan anti-classic NO HOLDS BARRED, The Hulkster’s big screen rival Zeus came OUT OF THE FILM and into the WWE to challenge Hogan to a real fight.

Those things really happened, so don’t be surprised if we find the evil, magical leprechaun running around a WWE ring in the near future. I honestly can’t see why my girlfriend doesn’t like wrestling. I really can’t.

John is a gentleman, a scholar, he’s an acrobat. He is one half of the comedy duo Good Ol’ JR, and considers himself a comedy writer/performer. This view has been questioned by others. He graduated with First Class Honours in Media Arts/Film & TV, a fact he will remain smug about long after everyone has stopped caring. He enjoys movies, theatre, live comedy and writing with the JR member and hetero life partner Ryan. Some of their sketches can be seen on YouTube and YOU can take their total hits to way over 17!
