Golden Globes Enjoy Terrorism Dramas, Frasier Crane

Last night’s Golden Globes awards gave most of their love to new hits and old awards favourites. In a three hour ceremony hosted by Ricky Gervais (who cracked wise about tough targets like Justin Bieber and Kim Kardashian), there were a few pleasant surprises, a few annoying omissions and a healthy dose of Hollywood backslapping.

Showtime’s HOMELAND, probably the biggest (critical) hit of the new TV season, fared well, taking home the Best Drama and Best Actress (for Clare Danes) awards. Other big winners included 90s sitcom stars and British things, with Kelsey Grammer and Matt LeBlanc winning acting awards for BOSS and the fairly-poor-except-Matt LeBlanc EPISODES respectively. DOWNTON ABBEY took the Best Mini-Series prize, creating a few tuts of controversy, as a show confirmed for a third season can hardly be dubbed a mini-series. Fellow Brits Kate Winslet and Idris Elba won acting trophies for MILDRED PIERCE and LUTHER, Elba winning over fellow THE WIRE alum Dominic West, perhaps in retroactive recognition for all the statues he should have won for playing Stringer Bell.

Other acting awards were reserved for people who’ve been in films. Laura Dern grabbed the comedy globe for HBO’s freshman series ENLIGHTENED, while Jessica Lange took the supporting award for FX’s AMERICAN HORROR STORY. Critics’ favourite Peter Dinklage beat out Hollywood bigwigs Tim Robbins and Paul Giamatti for his much-lauded performance in GAME OF THRONES. Finally, the Best Comedy or Musical category reminded audiences just how much awards panels love MODERN FAMILY, giving it the top prize once again. Other nominees included GLEE and EPISODES, apparently more worthy winners than PARKS AND RECREATION (only one nomination, for the much deserving Amy Poehler) and LOUIE.

The Golden Globes hold an interesting position in the film and TV awards calendar. They’re the run ups to the Oscars for the movies, and the come down from the Emmys for TV. The awards here were pretty predictable; a lot of following the lead of the Emmys, rewarding the biggest thing in each category, and giving MODERN FAMILY yet another trophy. Awards for the likes of Dinklage, Elba and HOMELAND are somewhat hopeful, but as usual, the snubbing of so many deserving contenders puts a damper on the package as a whole. GLEE over PARKS AND RECREATION and LOUIE? Just… come on.
