Screen Gems Looks To Kimberley Peirce For Carrie Remake

As countless classic horror movies are remade or linger menacingly in the development stage, another one pops up like an undead Romeo extra. Now it appears it is the turn of Brian De Palma’s high-school horror CARRIE, with Screen Gems looking to acquire acclaimed director Kimberley Peirce to helm their newly announced remake. De Palma’s effort is uttered in the same breath as other horror classics HALLOWEEN, A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, DAWN OF THE DEAD and THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE, (which funnily enough all have made remade – go figure) so this news comes as no surprise.

CARRIE, originally released in 1976, was based of the best-selling novel by legendary scribe Stephen King. It told the tragic tale of a Carrie White, a bullied teen outcast with telekinetic powers who, after being pushed too far by what she thought were newly-acquired friends, makes their Prom Night a one to forget. The performance of Sissy Spacek is unforgettable and the films finale was groundbreaking and still shocks to this day.

Peirce directed Hilary Swank to an Oscar winning performance in her heartbreaking true story BOYS DON’T CRY and last helmed war drama STOP LOSS that starred Ryan Phillipe and Abbie Cornish.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
