THN Counts Down The Top Ten ‘Guys’ Movies

THE HANGOVER PART II opened to absolutely HUGE success in 2011, taking a whopping $255 million at the US box office alone. Well, now the film is on DVD and Blu-Ray for you all to own, so as you get your backsides down to the shops to pick it up, we thought that we’d take a look at the top ten ‘guy’ movies that also float our boat, particularly when we’ve had a few shandys down the boozer on a Friday night; ones that you simply must check out!

Now, this list may be a bit random, and we apologise for the two red herrings that have found their way in at numbers 6 and 3, but we totally back up our reasoning for inclusion – and it’s our list.

So hunt these puppies down when you’re browsing the shelves at HMV!

10. REVENGE OF THE NERDS (1984)

REVENGE OF THE NERDS was a film released all of the way back in 1984, and while not garnering all that much critical success, the film just about edges into our top ten. The flick revolves around two nerds who form a fraternity in an attempt to fight back at those that taunt them at their new college. We like it as it’s a film that we all grew up with, which some of us can heavily relate to,  it has a lot of boobies in it, and well, it has lots of boobies in it. Here’s the trailer:

9. BACHELOR PARTY (1984)

I still cannot believe that this movie stars Tom Hanks. In one of his earliest roles, just before he made it BIG, Hanks plays a former party animal who finally takes the big step of calming it all down to indeed settle down. His mates, led by TJ Hooker’s Adrian Zmed, take it upon themselves to gibe Hanks the ultimate send off. THE HANGOVER owes a lot to the film, and ranks easily as not only on of the best boys movies out there, but also one of its leads best too. Here’s the original 1984 trailer.

8. STAG (1997)

Here’s a very little known movie from 1997. STAG revolves around just that. A stag party, or bachelor party to our US friends. This is an American movie, and ranks just a tad above the aforementioned BACHELOR PARTY due to the slightly darker tone. The plot revolves around a group of friends who throw a stag for their best mate, and for it, invite the company of a couple of strippers. All hell breaks loose when one of the guys accidentally kills one of the strippers. Oops. Mario Van Peebles, Andrew McCarthy, Kevin Dillon and the legendary Jerry Stiller star.

7. VERY BAD THINGS (1998)

Third stag themed movie in a row, and this one has almost exactly the same plot as the last flick, but rather than starring Johnny Drama from Entourage, it stars Ari Gold (Jeremy Piven) from Entourage. He plays the dude that accidentally kills the stripper in the Las Vegas hotel room, and pays the price. Jon Favreau plays the groom, Cameron Diaz plays his wife to be while Christian Slater lends some very dark support. Here’s the trailer.

6. WILD THINGS (1998)

Another Dillon, this time Matt, in a film that involves that scene with Denise Richards and Neve Campbell. The film revolves around a high school teacher who is supposedly framed for the rape of one of his students. That one pool scene, plus a bit of Bill Murray (but mostly that pool scene) sees the movie’s inclusion on this here list. There’s twist after twist after twist too. Spawned a sequel. Which was crap.

5. OLD SCHOOL (2003)

I’m not going to include THE HANGOVER PART II on this, but I will mention one of director Todd Phillips’s earlier films, the superb 2003 comedy OLD SCHOOL. Will Ferrell, Vince Vaughn and Luke Wilson star as three mates who head back to campus to try to recapture their college days. The film’s plot echoes what every single middle aged man wants to do as he hits his mid-thirties; go back to his teens and hit on hot girls. Jeremy Piven also turns up once again as the geeky Uni Dean Pritchard. We all have a Frank The Tank inside us. Right?

4. PORKY’S (1982)

Perhaps the grandaddy of American sex comedies. PORKY’S was the movie that defined a generation, and I think that it would be safe to say; no PORKY’S, no HANGOVER. Like REVENGE OF THE NERDS, which was probably a bit of a rip-off of PORKY’S, the film had very little critical success, but fans flocked to it, and recently it was rumoured that US shock-jock Howard Stern was going to remake it for modern audiences. The film is actually set in the 1950s, and revolves a group of high school mates who set out gain revenge on a dodgy out of town strip joint owner after attempting to lose their virginities.

3. BOUND (1996)

Jennifer Tilly and Gina Gershon play a couple of girls who get off with each other and attempt to do over Tilly’s gangster husband. That is all we need.

2. NATIONAL LAMPOON’S ANIMAL HOUSE (1978)

The ultimate college movie, and perhaps John Belushi’s finest hour. He owns it. “My advice to you is to start drinking heavily.” The members of Delta House cause havoc on campus as Dean Vernon Wormer strives to get them all expelled. It’s outrageous, particularly for its time, but it’s pure genius. John Landis directs. Altogether now. Toga! Toga! Toga!

1. THE HANGOVER/ THE HANGOVER PART II

I put it as number one, not because I was bribed by Warner Bros. but simply because I love these movies. I’m possibly in the minority of critics, but hopefully in the majority of proper human beings. The second movie is one of the most successful comedies ever, even though it duplicates a lot of what goes down in the original, which is why I put them both in here. I think that it works so well because again, we can all relate to it; we’ve all woken up with a headache in a strange place, with strange people, with tigers in our bathroom and babies in our cupboard.

THE HANGOVER PART II is out on DVD and Blu-Ray in the UK now.
