Gary Oldman Talks Smiley’s People

Speaking at IFP’s Gotham Independent Film Awards, Gary Oldman hinted that he may don George Smiley’s spectacles once again in an adaptation of John le Carré’s ‘Smiley’s People’. He also suggested he may play an older George Smiley than he does in TINKER, TAILOR, SOLDIER, SPY;

‘I think they’re whispering now that they might do ‘Smiley’s People,’ not so much as a sequel, because there’s a book in the middle actually, but we’ve set up the world and we’ll revisit.’

Although Oldman was already a well known and respected actor before the big screen adaptation of TINKER, TAILOR, he still had Alec Guinness’ venerable shoes to fill. Guinness is well remembered for appearing as George Smiley in the seven part BBC series back in 1979. He returned to the role three years later when the BBC decided to adapt and produce ‘Smiley’s People’ as a sequel.

But with a highly positive reception of Oldman’s performance in TINKER, TAILOR earlier this year, one can only assume that if another big screen feature with George Smiley does happen, it’ll at least be in Gary Oldman’s relatively safe hands.
