STAR TREK (2009) is getting a sequel – but unlike so many follow-up films of the past few decades (JAWS 2 (1978), SPIDER-MAN 2 (2004) and THE HANGOVER PART II (2011) spring to mind), J.J. Abrams’ latest instalment will not simply be called ‘STAR TREK 2′.
Rejecting a trend that first started back in 1974 with THE GODFATHER PART II, followed by an immeasurable number of series and sagas, Abrams’ new film is likely to sport instead a subtitle, much along the lines of the LORD OF THE RINGS or PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN series.
Stars of the critically acclaimed first reboot of the franchise, Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana, are set to return – though details of whether their shared romantic interest will continue are non-existent, with the script still in progress. Meanwhile, most of the original cast are signed on for a third film, with shooting for the second beginning in January 2012.
