George A. Romero: a man of horror legend, and one that has practically defined his own subgenre under the umbrella of spook films – from DAWN to DAY to NIGHT OF THE LIVING, and everything in between, Romero’s ‘…OF THE DEAD’ filmography is undoubtedly vast. But his latest project takes a slightly different turn to his usual fare.
Steven C. Schlozman, Harvard lecturer and medical school graduate, authored the basis for the project: ‘The Zombie Autopsies: Secret Notebooks From The Apocalypse’, a book Romero has described as ‘very tense and very medically correct’. The story follows a man attempting to research and cure the zombie ‘disease’, despite being infected with it himself.
A zombie book that’s described as ‘medically correct’ might be a bit of an oxymoron for some; the two don’t often appear in the same sentence, not least due to the implications of zombies existing in the real world. Which is to say, they don’t. It’ll be interesting to see what form these zombies take, and how Romero will bring the thesis of medical accuracy to the screen.
But, traditionalist horror fans, fear not – Romero promises while the film may indeed be medically correct, it will still be done ‘shockingly’. So expect to see a bit of classic Romero still in there, just with a bit of a modern, scientific twist – something that should prove greatly intriguing. And considering the horror master turned down a job on The Walking Dead to follow up this project, it’s safe to say the production values will be as high as ever.
