Rooney Mara and Christian Bale For Oldboy Remake?
If there’s one film that doesn’t quite warrant a remake, it’s Park Chan-Wook’s revenge thriller OLDBOY. Winning critical acclaim – and the Grand Prix at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival — it’s difficult to picture how an English-language adaptation could improve on the original. However, with the production moving away from more wholesome stars such like the previously rumoured Will Smith to a ‘grittier’ cast led by TRUE GRIT’s Josh Brolin, things are starting to look more interesting…
OLDBOY follows a man who after being imprisoned in a strange room for 15 years, is suddenly released. He then has five days to uncover the truth as to why he was taken.
Director Spike Lee (INSIDE MAN) and actor Josh Brolin have confirmed their involvement in the remake. Now sources are suggesting two casting choices: Rooney Mara (THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO) and Christian Bale (THE FIGHTER).
Mara is rumoured to play female lead and potential love interest Marie (named Mi-Do in the original), while Bale is being lined up for a more villainous role. The two actors seem like perfect choices as both seem to revel in controversial roles. Rooney Mara in particular is hot property right now due to the upcoming release of David Fincher’s remake of THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO.
