Dead Island Film Adaptation Announced

It’s only been out for a mere two and a half weeks, but Deep Silver’s zombie video game DEAD ISLAND has already got Lionsgate hungry for a big screen adaptation.

The game is set on a posh hotel resort that is turned into hell on earth following an invasion by the living dead. With no contact with the outside world, the survivors are forced to defend themselves with whatever they can find on the island. The game is notable for having a free-roaming world and four player co-op, which in non-geek terms means you can pretty much do whatever you want, and with three friends battering deadheads by your side.

The atmospheric trailer for the game (below) became a viral hit back in February, where it told the harrowing story of a family attacked by the zombies on the resort. There are also plans, in addition to further games, for publisher Deep Silver to develop DEAD ISLAND into graphic novels, books and other media.

‘Like the hundreds of journalists and millions of fans who were so passionate and vocal about the Dead Island trailer, we too were awestruck,’ said Lionsgate’s Joe Drake. ‘This is exactly the type of property we’re looking to adapt at Lionsgate – it’s sophisticated, edgy, and a true elevation of a genre that we know and love. It also has built in brand recognition around the world, and franchise potential.’

Although still only in the early stages of development, DEAD ISLAND already has Sean Daniel (DAZED & CONFUSED, THE MUMMY) attached to produce. The game’s trailer will apparently serve as the film’s primary creative inspiration, and the DEAD ISLAND film will reportedly be an ‘innovation of the zombie genre, focusing on human emotion, family ties and non-linear storytelling’.
