Barely a month goes by that we don’t see the release of some new high-profile reboot, and we’re edging ever closer to one of the most controversial of them all: THE THING. The 1982 original – itself a remake of THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD (1951) – is one horror fans’ most beloved works; an innovative and groundbreaking tale of mystery and pure terror from one of the grandmasters, John Carpenter, before he went all rubbish an’ that.
This new version – part remake, part prequel – keeps the action in Antartica and once again follows a group of scientists who discover the remains of an alien being, frozen in ice for donkey’s years (alright, 100,000). As we can see from this all-new trailer, the film will maintain a strong focus on body horror as ‘The Thing’ mutates and takes the form of its victims. This time however, director Matthjs van Heijningen has the aid of CGI, taking the place of Carpenter’s legendary prosthetics work.
Though this new trailer does look suitably scary and exciting, let’s hope it can live up to its predecessor…
THE THING stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, Eric Christian Olsen, and Ulrich Thomsen. It arrives in cinemas 2nd December 2011.
