It has been in the rumour mill since 2004, but the possibility has been made into a probability now that Peter Tolan (‘Rescue Me’, ANALYZE THIS) has completed a script for BAYWATCH, and handed it in to Paramount. However, if you are expecting a tongue-in-cheek romp, you may be in for a surprise. Tolan has described the premise as a not-so-cheesy comedy, in the vain of STRIPES (Bill Murray, John Candy). The writer/director revealed the information on the Matthew Aaron Show podcast.
He elaborated: ‘It’s not based on the show in any way, though there are a couple of winks at the show…I don’t know anything about the show. I didn’t watch it in preparation for writing this.’
Tolan also went on to confirm that he has included roles for David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson, but they are completely different to their characters in the show. All of this information does inspire the question: why write it under the guise of BAYWATCH, if there is absolutely nothing linking it sylistically, or in terms of character, to the original series?
The movie has been under consideration for seven years, since Dreamworks optioned the rights, and previously had several directors’ names attached to it; including Eli Roth (HOSTEL, THE LAST EXORCISM) and Ivan Reitman (GHOSTBUSTERS, KINDERGARTEN COP).

Martin has been a film buff (or geek, if you prefer) for as long as he can remember. However, he lives and longs for storytelling of all kinds, and writes across numerous mediums to feed his insatiable appetite. He lives in north-west London, and his favourite films are, possibly: PAN'S LABYRINTH, THEY LIVE, PSYCHO, HIGH FIDELITY, ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST, STAND BY ME, SIDEWAYS and OFFICE SPACE.
