According to an article just published over at Deadline, John Moore, helmer of the Mark Wahlberg video game adaptation of MAX PAYNE (as well as BEHIND ENEMY LINES, THE OMEN remake and FLIGHT OF THE PHOENIX), is all set to direct DIE HARD 5. After months of speculation and rumours of a short list to direct the fifth film in the franchise, both 20th Century Fox and Bruce Willis have settled on Irishman Moore because of his ‘love for the John McClane character, and his grasp of how to shoot practical, non-CGI-heavy action scenes that have been a hallmark of the Die Hard series.’
The word is that the film will shoot, and indeed be set over in Russia, with McClane’s son a featured character.
Other names said to have been in the frame to direct the planned $100 million budgeted movie were Gary Fleder, Paul McGuigan, Mikael Hafstrom, Joe Cornish (how awesome would that have been), Justin Lin and DRIVE director Nicolas Winding Refn.
The last DIE HARD movie, which was called DIE HARD 4.0 over here and LIVE FREE AND DIE HARD over in the States, grossed $384 million at the box office.
Personally, I didn’t have a lot of love for the last film and hated the disguised swearing in the theatrical version. Thank heavens they sorted that all out for the DVD release.
