Keira Knightley in talks for Romeo and Juliet reworking

With the number of remakes, reimaginings, and reboots these days, it was only a matter of time before The Bard’s work was given the makeover treatment. The project being mooted right now is an adaptation of the yet-to-be-released novel ‘When You Were Mine’ by Rebecca Serle. The story focuses Rosaline – the character that Romeo hails as his true love before he spies the lovely Juliet – and follows her as she splits from Shakespeare’s famous narrative and falls for Romeo’s cousin. The film will allegedly have a reverse approach to Baz Luhrmanns’s updated ROMEO + JULIET in that will be set in the 16th Century but employ modern language.

The project has a number of interesting people attached, particularly behind the camera, but the big news – as reported by Vulture – is that Brit luvvie Keira Knightley is in talks to play the role of Rosaline. However, Lily Collins (PRIEST) has also shown interest in the role, so either could take the part at this point. Back of house, (500) DAYS OF SUMMER writers Scott Neustader and Michael H. Weber are working on the screenplay, and GREY GARDENS helmer Michael Sucsy is on board to direct. At this stage it seems possible the film will be wrapped before the novel has hit the shelves. Either way, this could prove a very interesting production.
