Based on the book by Rick Porello, KILL THE IRISHMAN tells the story of the rugged Irish-American gangster Danny Greene (seen in the picture to the left). In 1960s Cleveland, Greene established himself as a gallant rogue in US media for ‘taking on’ the Cleveland mafia. Porello’s book reported that Greene escaped 8 assassination attempts from the hit men sent by mafia boss James Licalvoli.
The film, directed by Johnathan Hensleigh (WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE) is set for US release in 2011 and is crammed with a seriously charismatic cast. Ray Stevenson plays a beefy, mustachioed Danny Greene but more importantly CHRISTOPHER WALKEN is one of the main gangsters. Val Kilmar, Linda Cardellini and surprise, surprise Vinnie Jones are also on the cast identity parade.
Hopefully this won’t just be a movie of split screen gangster shtick. Danny Greene was a fascinating character in his own right, albeit a gentleman killer. As an Irishwoman, I’m hoping Hensleigh won’t start pushing shamrock as much as the gangster himself did. Greene was famous for his stereotypical fixation on the colour green, he drove a green car, had a green office and handed out green pens. He called himself a Celtic warrior and once had a code name of ‘Mr.Patrick’.
All I can say is, if I hear even a HINT of Enya on the soundtrack, Hensleigh will never be forgiven. See the trailer here:
