Mary Elizabeth Winstead gets to Kick Ass in The Thing Prequel

Mary Elizabeth Winstead, currently best known as Ramona Flowers in the excellent 2010 video-game/teen comedy fest  SCOTT PILGRIM VS THE WORLD, is gearing up to play the female lead in the 2011 prequel to John Carpenter’s THE THING.

Giving an interview in the November 2010 edition of Total Film, Winstead is eager to make sure that we all know that they’re “not doing a remake… these are similar characters in a similar scenario” she agrees, “but it’s not the same film”. If we’re telling the truth, this new version of the 1982 classic is indeed a prequel that intends to defy the unwritten law that prequels tend to suck. See HANNIBAL RISING or EXORCIST: THE BEGINNING for further details of this theory.

And yes, it’s true that prequels tend to tarnish the complexity or innovative nature of the originals in some cases but it seems that the makers of THE THING are aware of the trend and intend to disprove a sceptical audience.

For starters, this film apparently dovetails in to the original almost perfectly. For fans of the original, you will remember clearly the start; when a very talkative, nonsensical and trigger-happy European emerges above a nearby research base shooting everything he has from his helicopter at an infected canine?

This new film ends with that guy getting in to his helicopter.

So, yes movie fans, we will finally get to see what happened to that alien imitator before it situated itself inside the canine.

Ms Winstead aims to bring a bit of feminine kick-ass to the proceedings. Where the original THING was a veritable sausage fest, here Winstead is given the chance to wield a flame thrower which she feels adds a “natural bad ass component”.  Feminism, ladies, has never looked so alive and might I say, so pretty.

This is all good for Winstead. She’s currently hot property; proving that she could cut it in action with DIE HARD 4.0 and with edgier, more alternative roles in Edgar Wright’s SCOTT PILGRIM vs THE WORLD, and it looks set that the world is only set to see more of this bright young spark. She’s probably hoping that leading the charge with a flame thrower may just burn MAKE IT HAPPEN from her resume.

THE THING prequel, endorsed by Carpenter, is due out in APRIL 2011.
