Steven Spielberg makes $80 million in 2010… how?

If you’re thinking what I’m thinking then you’re wondering how it is that Steven Spielberg, who last directed a film in 2008 with the successful Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, sits snugly in third place in todays announcement of the Hollywood Rich List…

I did a little bit of digging and the old addage remains true.

The rich just keep getting richer and whilst most of us will never see that much money, it’s certainly interesting to find out how the man with the beard kept himself alive in the rich lists last year- even though he didn’t direct a feature.

Firstly, there was producing and consulting fees from which he made $10 million. This would include his producers fee for the critically acclaimed mini-series The Pacific and also for consulting fees on projects such as Super 8, with JJ Abrams.

Secondly, there was the revenue from his back catalogue. From this cash cow he made approximately $20 million. I guess when you’ve made several films that are still in the top Box Office lists of all time then thats a luxury he deserves.

Thirdly and most interestingly, Mr Spielberg made $40 million from his shares in theme parks, specifically from ” Universal theme park royalties” according to Vanity Fair.

Wowsers is all I’ll say to that and now I’m going to go and bid for shares in as many theme parks as I possibly can! I sure as heck am not about to make a billion dollars with my movie about blue-cat people on a distant planet ( Mr Cameron did it first so now my brilliant screenplay is dead in the water… ) and nor am I going to take that acting job for a little spy thriller in Venice… something like The Vacationis? or something?

I’ll call my agent tomorrow and get better details but I’m apparently up against some ” good” competition for the role…

Yeah… so I’m obviously joking but seriously, get investing in theme parks people.
