Stephen Fry Playing Mycroft in Sherlock Holmes 2

Just moments ago on The Danny Baker Show on BBC Radio 5 Live, Stephen Fry confirmed that he is going to play the character of Mycroft in Warner Brothers’ sequel to the 2009 movie Sherlock Holmes, which will once again star Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law as Holmes and Watson. Noomi Rapace (from the original version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo) will also appear in the comedy/ adventure sequel.

Guy Ritchie will once again direct.

Mycroft is the brother of Downey’s Holmes and will feature in Sherlock Holmes 2, along with the villain Moriarty, which is still yet to be cast.

Here’s WikiPedia‘s description of the character of Mycroft.

Possessing deductive powers exceeding even those of his younger brother, Mycroft is nonetheless incapable of performing detective work similar to that of Sherlock as he is unwilling to put in the physical effort necessary to bring cases to their conclusions.

…he has no ambition and no energy. He will not even go out of his way to verify his own solutions, and would rather be considered wrong than take the trouble to prove himself right. Again and again I have taken a problem to him, and have received an explanation which has afterwards proved to be the correct one. And yet he was absolutely incapable of working out the practical points… — Sherlock Holmes, speaking of his brother in “The Adventure of the Greek Interpreter”

Sherlock Holmes 2 starts shooting in the UK very soon for a December 16, 2011 release.

Paul has been writing for film websites for over ten years. The Hollywood News was born out of love for film and his frustration at not being a very good filmmaker himself. Those who cannot do, write about – or so they say. Aside from the site, Paul has directed a music video (badly), has one credit to his name on the IMDb, enjoys running, driving (now that he has finally passed his test at the age of 33), and of course going to the movies.
