Review: The Virginity Hit

the virginity hit review 300x161 Review: The Virginity HitIts Superbad, American Pie, and Porky’s by way of Blair Witch Project as a high school student attempts to lose his virginity all while his best friends capture his exploits via a video camera.

The film was co-produced by Adam McKay and Will Ferrell and it was written and directed by Huck Botko and Andrew Gurland. If this writer/director team sound familiar to you, its because they also penned the recently released The Last Exorcism. In fact, they were supposed to direct that movie but opted to go with this one instead. For my money, The Last Exorcism is the stronger of the two.

The documentary approach as used in The Virginity Hit actually works against the project. It’s meant to bring the audience into the teen action, but ultimately it serves as a distraction. The cast of newcomers have their moments, but during many portions of the film they struggle to find the naturalistic rhythm required to make a film of this nature truly come alive. As the nerdy but lovable lead of The Virginity Hit engages in one crazy, absurd situation after the next, I couldn’t help but feel I had seen all of this stuff before. These kids are likable enough, and a few of their encounters are somewhat amusing, but in the end, The Virginity Hit is more miss than hit.

About the Author

- Paul has been writing for film websites for over ten years. The Hollywood News was born out of love for film and his frustration at not being a very good filmmaker himself. Those who cannot do, write about – or so they say. Aside from the site, Paul has directed a music video (badly), has one credit to his name on the IMDb, enjoys running, driving (now that he has finally passed his test at the age of 33), and of course going to the movies.
